How to clean drainage ags

  • Clean the drainage bag Wash your hands well with soap and water.
  • Disconnect the bag from the catheter tubing.
  • Drain any remaining urine from the bag you just disconnected. 
  • Pour some warm (not hot) soapy water into the bag.
  • Open the drainage valve to drain the soap.

The port that hooks up to the catheter tube, is it a one way valve?  If a patient sleeps with the leg bag, is there the possibility the urine can travel from the bag and back into her body and increase environment for infection?

Thank you for reaching out to us. All of the Medline leg bags and drain bags have an anti-reflux mechanism to avoid backup of the urine. 

However, I would like to point out that leg bags typically wouldn’t be used as an overnight drainage bag. A 2000ml drain bag is what is usually switched over to before the individual goes to sleep.
